Brainstorm Worksheet | Tips for Naming Your Business
The name is arguably the most important decision you will make about your business. It can describe who you are, what you do, and can be your first opportunity to establish a relationship with your customer. It’s the ultimate first impression, and of course, you want to make it a good one. How to come up with the name for your business is the most challenging part, because the possibilities are endless. Getting started can be super overwhelming, so we have come up with a simple four-step process to help you find a name that suits your business best. So let’s get cracking!
Prep | Brand Summary
To come up with a bangin’ name for your business, you first need to really have a clear idea of the personality of your brand. What are some words that describe what you do? Who is buying your products or services? Answer the questions on our Prep/Brand Summary page.
Make a list of traits that will help you create an inspiring word bank. This is the first step to getting those creative juices flowing!
Brainstorm | Wordbank
Once you have your traits listed, you can utilize our wordbank graphic [pg. 2] to find as many word associations as possible. Feeling stuck? Consult with a thesaurus, google, a rhyming dictionary or a word generator [we love panabee] – anything to drum up new word associations on your quest for the right name! Above all, don’t censor yourself, write whatever comes to mind! When you are feeling good about your wordbank, organize your thoughts and start to build some name options.
Use page three to start exploring your options! Try to come up with names for every category – the more names the better! When you have some names that make you jump for joy (or maybe hop around on one foot awkwardly – if so return to step 2) you need to systematically go through them. Highlight your favorites to formulate your thoughts and get a clearer idea of which direction you want to go in.
Evaluations | Decision Time
Take your top five names and go through our list of questions on page four to determine which name takes the top prize. Make sure the name you choose ticks all of the important boxes to insure your business name can go the distance – literally and figuratively! Is your first impression of the name strong? Does it work internationally? Score it up and pick your winner!
